To Catch a Thief Series

by Jill Elizabeth Nelson

Wow. That's all I can say about these books.

The first one, The Reluctant Burglar was so well written and clever and enthralling. I couldn't put it down. The second one was only better.

The Reluctant Smuggler? I didn't think she could improve upon The Reluctant Runaway, but she did. It is wonderful.

I love Tony and Desi. Poor Desi means well, but she gets into a scrape then Tony comes and tries to save her and things go from bad to worse and. . . what a ride!

If you get a chance to read any of these books, do so.

My hubby is a non-fiction reader. I left The Reluctant Runaway by the bed on my table. I think the picture of the motorcycle lured him. (he's a night worker). He called me at ten in the morning at work. I said, "Oh my, what are you doing up? Are they digging up the lines again next door?"
"No, you left Reluctant Runaway by the bed."
"Oh, you're reading it?"
"I can't put it down! And I'm sleepy."
:D

Great job Jill.

Mortimer Literary Mentorship Award

It had been a long day sprinkled with annoying people, and some good news (my house insurance issues seem to be ironed out, thanks to my husband's actions).

We had a pipe freeze and bust in the kitchen along the outside wall and my hubby has been working on it. I couldn't stand my kitchen anymore. Besides, I just bought a 4 cup programmable coffee pot and I didn't want to put it on a cluttered counter. The phone rang and I continued in my task because I live in a house with two teenage boys. I mean, really, what are the chances the phone call is for me, right?

It was. My friend Robin was on the other end so excited I could barely understand her. "I just wanted to be the first to congratulate you!" My mind quickly flips through the things that I have out, um, only one and it's only two chapters so I know I haven't sold a book. My brilliant response was, "Huh?"

Through a series of Pammer-like events--those that know me understand what a dramatic life I lead. . .SIGH--I wasn't able to get on the web until after 9:00 in the evening!! I gave my mother-in-law the lowdown, as much as I knew and she was just as thrilled as I was, only we still weren't sure exactly WHAT we were thrilled about, lol. (Now that's a good mother-in-law.)

When I got online, I found out that I had been awarded the Mortimer Literary Mentorship Award for 2008!!

What it amounts to is she has a heart for writers. She was looking for a writer who needed a little help that she could mentor through the year. The goal is to have a publishable manuscript by December and offer me representation!!!! (Okay, I've probably used my quota of exclamation marks for the year.)

In September 2007, the Lord opened my eyes to my many faults as a writer. I knew the rules but lacked the knowlege of how to apply them. I really needed a mentor. But it opened my eyes to the fact that crits are meant to help, not to hurt. There isn't getting an A on a crit. I couldn't get all the answers perfect (a driving need in school. . .I once cried over getting a B on my paper!) This is when I started learning. (more on this attitude in a different blog post)

Kelly was kind enough to go over some of my preliminary chapters. Granted my friend Cheryl, slapped my hands when she got a gander of what I'd turned in. She said, "If I didn't know it was yours, I would have never guessed you wrote that! It looks like you threw something on paper just to have something." Actually that's what I'd done. I was busy with conference prep (not only my own, but my Vice Presidential duties as well) and life interupted and I wrote some drivel.

Kelly gave me back the chapter dripping with red ink. (this was a labor of love, guys because it was a BAD chapter). She went over it with me and since God had opened my eyes, well, I nearly cried with relief because she was showing me how to apply the rules I knew. I needed examples and to be shown where I'd gone wrong. I could've kissed her. In fact I might have, lol!

The Lord opened my eyes to many other things, but at this point I knew that I had a LOT of hard work ahead of me. At that point I knew I could take up the challenge and keep my promise to God, or give up and ignore my calling and bury my talent until the Master came home. My dad taught me to face a challenge head on. He also taught me that if you make a promise you do your dead-level best to keep it. So I strapped up and prepared for a bumpy ride.

That Kelly has bestowed her mentoring on me is beyond gracious. I am overwhelmed with gratitude. And I can't help but wonder, how many writers write, and think they write well, and may actually get representation, but don't have anyone to help them see why they are still unpublished.

Despite all the turmoil that has happened in the last few weeks in my life, God has been so good to me.

Kelly, I am so glad God brought us together. You are a remarkable woman. (And you have great taste in shoes.) :D

Bayou Corruption

by Robin Caroll

I don't have a screen shot of the cover, but it rocks too.

However, the story inside the covers? Wow.

Robin Caroll absolutely outdid herself with this story. So well crafted you hate to say goodbye to the characters at the end, even though the ending is very satisfying.

She is a brilliant writer and I LOVE this setting and the characters. I can't wait to read the next installement. (Oh, wait, I already did, but trust me, you will love it too.) If you haven't read Bayou Justice or Bayou Corruption, get out of your recliner and go get both of them. You won't be sorry.

Great job Robin! I'm so proud of you, girl.
